Charge your EV with Solar Panels
Your EV charger can draw power from your solar setup — giving you effectively free mileage. It is one of the most effective ways to cut your running costs.
A smart charger handles this automatically, using solar surplus when it’s available and switching to a low-cost overnight tariff when it isn’t. Add battery storage, and you can store daytime solar to charge your car in the evening too.

How do I use my EV Charger?
It varies slightly depending on the charger model, but in practice, EV chargers are very easy to use. Usually, you simply plug your vehicle in and leave it to charge.
You can either plug in and start charging straight away, or use the smart features available on most modern chargers to take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity.
When we install your charger, our team can help you download the correct app and set everything up if you’d like to use the smart features. We’ll configure your charger, add your vehicle details and help you tell the app which electricity tariff you’re on. The app can then use this information to schedule your charging during the cheapest periods.
In practice, you’ll usually just plug your vehicle in, tell the app what time you need it charged by, and let the charger do the rest.
For example: you arrive home from work at 5:30pm and plug your car in. You tell the app you need the vehicle fully charged by 7am. Instead of charging immediately, the app can automatically wait until your cheaper off-peak period begins — for example, 11:30pm — and then charge your vehicle overnight. By the time you get to the vehicle at 7am, charging will be complete. So you won’t need to wait up late to start the charge, most apps simply do this for you.
If you have solar panels and/or a home battery, we can also configure compatible chargers to prioritise your available solar energy, helping you make the most of the electricity you generate at home and potentially charge your EV using your free solar power.
What is the typical cost for installing an EV charger at home?
A domestic EV charger installation typically costs between £800–£1,200, depending on your property’s electrical setup, cable routing, and the charger model you choose. At PHS, we provide a fixed, no-obligation quote after a free home survey, so you know the exact cost before committing.
Can someone use my EV charger while I am not at home?
Most tethered chargers include a lock feature that prevents unauthorised use, giving you peace of mind. For example, the Ohme ePod has settings on the app that require you to approve every charge via the app for total security. If you’re considering an untethered charger, it’s worth checking what security features are available before you buy. Our team can talk you through the safest option for your home during your free survey.
Will an EV charger increase my electricity bill?
Yes, your electricity bill will increase because you’re paying to charge your car at home however, it is likely to still be a significant saving.
For example, an average driver covering 10,000 miles per year, public charging or fuel costs can exceed £1,300 annually, whereas smart home charging can bring that cost down to roughly £400.
So while your electricity bill may increase by £400 annually, there’s a £900 saving on fuel/public charging costs.
Is home EV charger installation safe?
Yes. Every installation includes essential safety features such as RCD protection to guard against electric shock and fault current, so you can charge your vehicle with complete peace of mind.
PHS is a NAPIT and NICEIC approved installer, and all installations are carried out by qualified, certified engineers in line with the latest UK wiring regulations and manufacturer standards — so your installation is safe, compliant, and fully guaranteed.
How long does the installation take?
Most home EV charger installations are completed in a single day, usually within 2–4 hours. More complex jobs, such as those requiring a new consumer unit upgrade or longer cable runs may take a little longer, which we’ll flag clearly during your survey.
Do I need planning permission?
Most homeowners don’t need planning permission to install an EV charger, as it falls under permitted development rights. Exceptions can apply for listed buildings, flats, or if the charger is installed facing a highway. Our installers will confirm this during your survey.
Am I eligible for a government EV charger grant?
The OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) EV chargepoint grant is available for eligible flat owners and landlords, though the previous homeowner grant has now closed. We’ll confirm your eligibility for any current schemes as part of your free consultation.
Are there funding schemes available for workplace or fleet EV charging?
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) offers eligible businesses support towards the cost of EV charger installation. Availability and eligibility criteria can change, so we’ll confirm what applies to your organisation as part of your initial consultation.
