FAQ
Why does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme exist?
The UK government introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to help homeowners move away from oil, gas and LPG heating and switch to low-carbon alternatives like heat pumps. Heat pumps are far more efficient than traditional boilers, but the upfront cost can be a barrier — so the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offsets that cost directly, making the switch realistic for ordinary households.
How Much Could You Get from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
- £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump for most homes in England and Wales
- £9,000 towards an air source or ground source heat pump if your home currently runs on oil or LPG (a temporary uplift running from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027)
Eligibility checks apply.
Who's Eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is available to homeowners only. If you own your property and you’re replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump, you could qualify.
How do I apply for the grant?
We handle your Boiler Upgrade Scheme application on your behalf. It involves working directly with Ofgem, and it’s easy to get wrong if you’re not familiar with the process. That’s where we come in.
As an MCS-certified installer, we handle your entire Boiler Upgrade Scheme application:
- We check your eligibility
- We submit the application on your behalf
- We manage all the paperwork and correspondence with Ofgem
- You don’t need to apply, chase, or do anything yourself
How is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant Applied?
If you’re eligible, your Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is simply deducted from your quote. You’ll never need to pay the full cost upfront and wait for a refund — the discount is built straight into the price you pay us. You only pay the balance after the grant has been taken off.
Is checking my Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility free?
Yes. There’s no cost and no obligation to check whether you qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Do I need a valid EPC to apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Not necessarily. Since April 2026, homeowners without a valid EPC can still apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme using alternative evidence, such as a recent utility bill, photographs of the existing heating system, or an expired EPC certificate number. If your property does have a valid EPC, this must still be submitted as part of your Boiler Upgrade Scheme application. We’ll confirm exactly what’s needed for your home when we check your Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility.
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for a holiday home or second property?
Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme isn’t limited to your main residence, you can claim the grant on any property you own, whether it’s your primary home, a second home, or a rented-out property. As long as the property meets the Boiler Upgrade Scheme criteria and the installation is carried out by an MCS-certified installer, it doesn’t matter whether you live there full-time. We’ll confirm your Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility for any property you own when you get in touch.
