Charge your EV with Solar Panels
Your EV charger can draw power from your solar setup — giving you effectively free mileage. It is one of the most effective ways to cut your running costs.
A smart charger handles this automatically, using solar surplus when it’s available and switching to a low-cost overnight tariff when it isn’t. Add battery storage, and you can store daytime solar to charge your car in the evening too.

Common questions
If your question isn't listed, please reach out to us below.
What is the typical cost for installing an EV charger at home?
A domestic EV charger installation typically costs between £800–£1,200, depending on your property’s electrical setup, cable routing, and the charger model you choose. At PHS, we provide a fixed, no-obligation quote after a free home survey, so you know the exact cost before committing.
Can someone use my EV charger while I am not at home?
Most tethered chargers include a lock feature that prevents unauthorised use, giving you peace of mind. If you’re considering an untethered charger, it’s worth checking what security features are available before you buy. Our team can talk you through the safest option for your home during your free survey.
Will an EV charger increase my electricity bill?
Charging an EV at home typically costs significantly less than public charging or petrol, especially on an EV-specific tariff with cheaper overnight rates. Many customers see a net saving once fuel costs are factored in.
Is home EV charger installation safe?
Yes. Every installation includes essential safety features such as RCD protection to guard against electric shock and fault current, so you can charge your vehicle with complete peace of mind.
PHS is a NAPIT and NICEIC approved installer, and all installations are carried out by qualified, certified engineers in line with the latest UK wiring regulations and manufacturer standards — so your installation is safe, compliant, and fully guaranteed.
How long does the installation take?
Most home EV charger installations are completed in a single day, usually within 2–4 hours. More complex jobs, such as those requiring a new consumer unit upgrade or longer cable runs may take a little longer, which we’ll flag clearly during your survey.
Do I need planning permission?
Most homeowners don’t need planning permission to install an EV charger, as it falls under permitted development rights. Exceptions can apply for listed buildings, flats, or if the charger is installed facing a highway. Our installers will confirm this during your survey.
Am I eligible for a government EV charger grant?
The OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) EV chargepoint grant is available for eligible flat owners and landlords, though the previous homeowner grant has now closed. We’ll confirm your eligibility for any current schemes as part of your free consultation.
Are there funding schemes available for workplace or fleet EV charging?
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) offers eligible businesses support towards the cost of EV charger installation. Availability and eligibility criteria can change, so we’ll confirm what applies to your organisation as part of your initial consultation.
